Dragon Boat Festival

Duan Wu Jie - Every 5th May according to the lunar calendar, most Chinese families celebrate the this day by eating ZHONGZI - dumpling. This is to commemorate the death of an ancient chinese character. Here's the story which I copy and paste from http://www.chinapage.com/quyuan2.html

Chu Yuan [Qu Yuan ] (340?-278 b.c.), the chief poet in the Songs of Chu, was a member of the ruling house, a stateman and diplomat. In his youth, he has a brilliant official career and was made a court minister and at one time the Chu envoy to Chi (in Shantung), a great neighboring state. But Chu Yuan's comet-like success incurred the jealousy of his fellow ministers, who slandered and intrigued against him. In consequence Chu Yuan lost the king's favor and was dismissed from office. There were several ups and downs in his career - for after each banishment he was recalled to court, only to be again rebuffed and disgraced. In the meantime, his country was in danger. Failing to heed Chu Yuan's advice, the king of Chu foolishly went to a conference with the king of Chin (in Shensi), the most powerful military state in that period; he was held there by the Chin army and died in captivity. His son, the new king, instead of avenging his father's death, made a humiliating peace with his enemy. This, however, did not deter Chin's aggressive designs against Chu, and Chu Yuan, who had started his exile as a result of his political failure, lived long enough to see the capital of his state plundered and ruined by the conquering army of Chin in 278 b.c. At that time, Chu Yuan was already an old man of over sixty, and the fall of the Chu capital was the last blow to his patriotic hope. He does not seem to have long survived his diaster, for the next we hear of him is that he had drowned himself in the river Mi-lo.

Tradition says that his death occurred on the fifth day of the fifth moon (month). Ever since, the day is celebrated as the Day of Dragon Boat Festival to commemorate his drowning.

As the first known great poet in China, Chu Yuan has been called the father of Chinese poetry and has become, in the opinion of some, a national culture hero.

Also, I remembered when I was young, there were spectacular dragon boats at my hometown. At that time, almost everyone from every households came to town. It was indeed a colourful and vibrant festival which I really miss now.

Ever since I came to NZ, I always bought zhongzi from an Asian grocery store. It is different this year. Jon (who has always loved cooking) decided to try out making it. He prepared everything and all I did was help him to wrap it. (It's really yum *whisper*)

Glutinous Rice

Braised Pork

Peanuts

HorseRadish

Chinese Mushroom

Bamboo leaves

Two missing ingredients - Salted eggs and Dried shrimps or else it would have been a perfect dumpling. Okay, this is already a good one as it is Jon's first time making it

Tadaaaa -- After THREE hours of boiling

The Master Chef

His KULI

This is just a random one. It is an eyesore to look at all the messy wires laying around on the floor. Therefore, I came out with this not so brilliant idea because it kept on falling off.

And I found this masterpiece of mine which I did in first year - Immunity. This is soo nerdy looking *urk*

Home cooked food

Paper A down this noon!! It's better than I thought even tho MCQs were really specific in a sense that the questions that they asked were really in depth!! Can you imagine that they even asked about unimportant transcription factors that no one will care except those crazy researchers *BOOOooo* I have a high chance of failing this section. Paper A consists of two sections - MCQs and SAQ. Anyway, it's all good as long as I get a passing grade for it.

I can't wait till hols! My last one is Oral exam - NIGHTMARE!!! It comprises of four stations where we have to do labelling, patient assessment (role play), science and therapeutics where they can ask you about chemistry, pharmacokinetics and those questions that you will never expect. Each station is EIGHT minutes.

Enough about my school stuff. Let's get on to non-academic life.
Last FRIDAY, it was Jon's last day of work/school. He had pot luck with his med friends at our residence at the homey cargill flat! *prasaaaan*
Here's the delicious foods! (Did not manage to capture all the food)

My lunch
Pasta Salad

Lolly Cake

Carrot Cake

On that night itself, I wanted to have salad pasta for my supper/study snack. Unfortunately, the pasta just spilled on the floor the moment I took it out from the fridge! It is just a hint that I should just STOP eating! !

Next day, Jon cooked Singaporean style vermicelli (with curry powder) for dinner

And for supper - Tang Yuan (with peanut fillings in some)

Today after dinner, Jon and I decided to try out making this small sweet dumplings. I called it Kizhang. Ingredients are bought from Sew Hoy, Korean Unimart, FuLe and not to forget the pork from New World. Oh yeah, these are used to make BaZhang this coming Wed!!

I really feel soo good about lying on my bed, blogging and watching my series!! I really wish that my exam's over! I even tidy and clean up my table and room AGAIN. Anyhow, one more to go and I am DONE!!

Huntsman Steakhouse

FIRST paper done!!! If u ask me how I did --> one word - BAD!!! Can only blame myself coz this semester, I am really not motivated to study eventho i said I will study but ended up only did a bit. Not to mention that I answered the wrong question and the time constraint with the coldness of the examination room (Unlucky enough that I sat by the window). Anyway, stop complaining and move on to....

After exam -> had dinner with Art at Huntsman Steakhouse@ George Street. He had the voucher thing and that's the reason why he brought me there as you need two person to use that so thank a lot!

All meals come with unlimited salad that u can just grab from the salad bar. I was so hungry that I went twice to that bar while waiting for my meal. Another thing was the waiter forgot our orders so we had to wait for quite a while. Anyhow, it's all good because we were served a plate of complimentary garlic breads.
